The problem with renewables - corn ethanol, cellulosic ethanol, biodiesel, solar, hydropower, etc is ALWAYS one of scale. Should we be smart in using them all? Yes, we should. All of them. But we also need oil, natural gas and nuclear.

by CatMan623  Feb 27, 2015

Corn production required to displace gasoline and diesel would take more land in the U.S. than is currently used to grow crops.

by CatMan623  Feb 27, 2015

According to the government, only 408,000,000 acres of land are farmed in the U.S...... http://www.epa.gov/agriculture/ag101/landuse.html

by CatMan623  Feb 27, 2015

Dividing 188,099,100,000 gal/year by 425 gal/acre says we need 442,586,118 acres of corn produced.

by CatMan623  Feb 27, 2015

A common figure for ethanol is 425 gal/acre.

by CatMan623  Feb 27, 2015

So 12.270 million bbl/day equals 4,478,550,000 bbl/year or 188,099,100,000 gal/year.

by CatMan623  Feb 27, 2015

Approx 3.5 million bbl/day of diesel fuel at <15 ppm sulfur consumed per day in the U.S.... http://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/pet_cons_psup_dc_nus_mbblpd_a.htm

by CatMan623  Feb 27, 2015

Some calculations.....8.77 million bbl of gasoline consumed/day in the U.S. http://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.cfm?id=23&t=10

You wrote "Those millions of acres of desert would really be much better utilized with wind turbines and solar panels..." Seems as though the National Renewable Energy Laboratory disagrees with your belief that Arizona is a good place to produce wind energy. Arizona has comparatively little wind energy available. Here's a link to their map of wind resources in the U.S..... http://www.azsolarcenter.org/images/articles/otherre/uswindmap.gif

OK, please give me a link to support your Colorado water for corn production claim. And tell me who funded it......<smile>
