So the effective price went down and demand went up. Just like they said in Econ 1A.

Why does it work in Japan and not in the US ????
Could it be because they don't have Republican's and Democrats whizzing in each others Cheerios ????

Rather than giving subsidies on eco-friendly vehicles why don't they assess penalties on non eco-friendly vehicles? This would give them a new source of revenue instead of wasting tax payer money.

They had to do something with all those water logged cars siting around. Melt them down and rebuild new cars.

@APlus "Why doesn't the USA government put tariffs and use other on foreign companies who make cars and get all these benefits -- to make the playing field level for US car makers? "
I strongly agree with what you said!

This is a good thing for Japan and will help them get back on ther feet after the disasters they suffered in 1911.

Keep on subsiding your sales. Wait until that goes away and watch the fall in sales.

Agree with MidNJ that the tsunami did remove quite a number of cars, but only where it struck. The loss of power and parts was bigger for continued production. I think that Japan was facing something like the US was when GM looked like it was going under, only Japan's car manufactures suffered from natural disaster, not mismanagement. The Japanese government almost had no choice but introduce subsidies.
The article doesn't say up to what cc size the vehicles being subsidised are, but it would be interesting to know how much subsidy is given to what cc size. We have motorcycles and outboard boat engines that are a LOT bigger than 660cc and by the gist of the article, they have cars that have even SMALLER engines!
Were these subsidies for sales within Japan? Or were they for offshore exports?

From the videos I saw of the earthquake aftermath, lots of cars got destroyed in Japan last year and they need to be replaced.
